For me, and for many others I assume, seeing a smiling jack-o'-lantern on porches or in windows brings to mind my own family's yearly pumpkin carving adventures. It's one of my favourite memories of the season, focussed on laughter, fun, and of course that bizarre feeling of cold pumpkin insides sliding through your fingers as you prepare your pumpkin for carving. Eurgh. Still, it's a fantastic memory and one that makes me smile... and isn't that what it's all about?
I made these jack-o'-lanterns offered here in homage to those nights of pumpkin carving all those years ago (and every year since, really... pumpkin carving is something you never really outgrow I think) for an open house I did in 2010, as a special offering for those who attended. I liked the little guys so much that I decided to make them a yearly addition to my Fall selections. Each is entirely hand blown and individually made, meaning no two are exactly alike. The face is also made of glass, which is melted and drawn on while the pumpkin body is still molten, ensuring they fuse permanently. The stem of the jack-o'-lantern is looped in a way that allows for easy hanging around the house (if you so choose, they honestly look adorable however you decide to display them). I've been told people have given them as gifts, hung them from doors and cupboards, inside their office, and I've even heard of people hanging them on their Christmas Trees. Jack Skellington would approve, I think!
